Grigory Yavlinsky: approval of the music by Alexandrov as the hymn for Russia represents a step towards a split in society

The Yabloko faction in the State Duma will vote against the adoption of the music of the USSR anthem as the new anthem of Russia. This declaration was made by Grigory Yavlinsky at the meeting of the President of the RF with the heads of the Duma factions and members of the State Council held in the Kremlin on December 4, 2000.

Noting that the anthem of a country represents “a symbol of the unity of the state”, Yavlinsky also stressed that approval of the music by Alexandrov as the anthem of Russia will mean “a step towards a split in society”.

Yavlinsky believes that, irrespective of the words proposed for this music, a considerable part of society still does not separate the music by Alexandrov from the words of the USSR anthem. Consequently, Yavlinsky stressed that on hearing the anthem of Russia, its citizens will sing different words.

Grigory Yavlinsky called this proposal to approve the music by Alexandrov as an anthem of Russia “unconstructive and harmful”.

The Head of the Union of the Right-Wing Forces faction of the State Duma

Boris Nemtsov in his speech supported the position of the Yabloko leader.

The Yabloko faction is ready to vote for approval of the double-headed eagle as the State Emblem of Russia and a tricolour flag as the State Flag of Russia.
