Grigory Yavlinsky on the global economic problems

Press Release

May 23, 2012

We can overcome the global economic crisis only changing the present rules of our life and checking them with such concepts such as trust, morality and the public good, said Grigory Yavlinsky, member of YABLOKOs Political Committee and Doctor of Economic Sciences.

"There is a substitution of meanings, when the market economy is viewed at solely as a tool for deriving profit, manufacturers are not oriented to the real needs of the people depriving the latter of choice and imposing what will bring the greatest profit. This is not the post-industrial economy, but a postmodern world where not only businessmen, but also experts and politicians are guided only by self-interests and that is why they can not cope in principle with the ongoing crisis," Yavlinsky stressed in the debate on the global economic problems with political philosopher Prof. Michael Sandel, Harvard University and Diane Coyle, academic and economist.

The debate took place in the BBC Start the Week programme, a popular discussion program on the BBC 4, on May 21, 2012. The discussion was devoted to the fundamental problems underlying the global crisis which, according to all the participants of the discussion, can not be limited to economics only.

On May 22, Grigory Yavlinsky made a lecture at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), one of the world's key think tanks.

Grigory Yavlinsky was also invited to one of the most popular BBC television programmes Hard Talk. The programme represents an interview with an anchor Staphen Sackur on the most urgent issues. The format of the programme envisages acute and tough questions from the anchor. In particular, interviewing Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of Vladimir Putin in March 2012, Sakur asked him why the government was afraid of the opposition, and why the officials responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky were not in prison.

Grigory Yavlinsky - professor, doctor of economic sciences the author of several books on the Russian and world economy. In the Fall of 2011, the Yale University published his book Realeconomik: The Hidden Cause of the Great Recession (And How to Avert the Next One). The book touching on the most crucial issues, "inconvenient" for the world's political and business elite, provoked serious academic discussions and a broad resonance in business and political circles.
