Sanctions against Russian orphans

Grigory Yavlinsky's Live Journal

December 19, 2012

The issue on the [Russian Duma] ban on adoptions of [Russian] orphans by Americans is important. I am very sorry for the children.

It is a significant law. Not only it gives another proof of stupidity and the resulting cruelty, but also demonstrates the Bolshevik and Stalinist nature of the Russian political system. A kind of capitalism with a Stalin's face.

Bolsheviks and Stalinists always take a "revenge" on their enemy in such a way that it brings a huge and often irreparable damage to the citizens of Russia, in this case to desolate and helpless children, whom they regard as their property, as serfs, as inanimate objects...

The sanctions against Russian orphans imposed by the State Duma are a disgusting, cruel, unfair and cowardly decision adopted in a unanimous pseudo-patriotic frenzy.

And the American "Magnitsky Law" has very little to do with this. This document maybe classified as "moral guidance", as it is virtually only a declaration and does not introduce something really new into practice. It results from a specific reflection of a set of Russian officials actions in the American parliamentary system. The latter allowed for an abruptness, which part of the Russian bureaucracy decided to respond to in a wild way, thus reminding to the world how and by whom they were brought up and what their true nature is.

A problem of adoption of Russian orphans by a certain type of American families does exist, but it does not have anything to do with issuing of US visas to [Russian] officials.

Over the past ten years 19 Russian children adopted by American parents were killed in the US. However, since the collapse of the USSR Americans have adopted about 100,000 Russian children in total. In terms of comparison, according to the RIA Novosti [news agency], as of 2006, 1220 children adopted by Russian citizens were killed for the 15 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. According to the data from the official website of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, there are dozens of documented cases of murder of children (including infants) by their parents only in 2012.

And now simply because some bureaucratic rascal (who, by the way, drove these children into a miserable condition because of his or her theft) will not be allowed to the US for shopping, thousands of tiny abandoned children will be deprived of the opportunity to live like ordinary people.

As for Sergei Magnitsky, we believe his actual murder in prison to be the hardest criminal offense, and those responsible for it should be punished by law. The American "Magnitsky Act" does not affect our point of view here, we have known and understood all about our bureaucracy and corruption without it.
