Press Release

July 13, 2012

Today YABLOKO activists conducted by the State Duma a series of one-person pickets against the law on non-profit organisations and the libel law considerably worsening the situation for civil society activists. YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin who also participated in the action said that the State Duma should concentrate on the creation of a commission for investigating the causes of the tragic flood in the Krasnodar Territory, rather than consideration of reprisals prone amendments to the law on non-profit organisations and restoring liability for libel as a criminal offense.

YABLOKO activists in turn held a banner picturing Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Heinrich Himmler, Felix Dzerzhinsky, Lavrenty Beria and Vladimir Putin with a subscription Amendments to the law on non-profit organisations. Fascists are for it! KGB people are for it!

Sergei Mitrokhin also participated in a journalists picket against the libel law. He drew a placard No to the libel law at site.

A terrible tragedy [flood taking the lives of many people] has just happened in our country, but our parliament is messing with other things, Mitrokhin stressed. He also said that the reprisals prone amendments to the laws on rallies and non-profit organisations, censorship in the Internet and return of article Libel to the Criminal Code are targeted against opposition, civil society and independent press.

"Obviously, there the systems for ensure safety of citizens are lacking in the country, and I have personally witnessed this in Krymsk. Instead of creating a commission for investigation of the officials failure to timely notify and rescue people from the flood, the State Duma has been speedily stamping repressive laws. I think this is a sign of some insanity of the state, Mitrokhin said.

Earlier, YABLOKO leader had made a statement demanding that the deputies should postpone all the current issues to the fall, and immediately set up a parliamentary commission for investigation of the causes of the flood. The refusal of the State Duma to create such a commission will be considered as a manifestation of legislators contempt to life and security of Russian citizens, ran Mitrokhins statement.

Also simultaneously with YABLOKOs action, representatives of mass media also held one person pickets by the State Duma protesting against the libel law. Police warned the protesters on the inadmissibility of violations, but did not interfere with carrying out the action.

Today, on the last day of the spring session, the State Duma is going to adopt in final reading the amendments to the law on non-profit organisations giving these organisations the status of foreign agent and returning to the Criminal Code of a penalty for libel.
