YABLOKO leader Sergei Mitrokhin believes that the attempted
murder on Nikolai Nesterenko, Deputy Ataman of the Anapa City
Cossack Community, demonstrates a qualitatively new stage
of confrontation between public activists and criminal authorities
of the Krasnodar Territory.
Attempted murder on Nikolai Nesterenko was committed in Anapa
on February 22. A killer opened fire on the car of the Cossack.
Nesterenko was wounded and his driver Viktor Zhuk was killed.
Nikolay Nesterenko is one of the leaders of the civil society
in Anapa. For many years he has been fighting against unlawfulness,
violation of citizens rights and abuse of power by businessmen
and officials in the city.
"Earlier they have exerted pressure on public activists
in different forms, including their unlawful conviction on
trumped up criminal cases, but now we can say that, that they
begin shooting the most active public figures who do not let
them to do lawlessness," said YABLOKOs leader.
He also expressed his condolences to the family of the killed
Viktor Zhuk and announced his full support to Nikolai Nesterenko
and his public activities in Anapa.
"We take this crime on our special control and we will
strive so that this crime is investigated and its organizers,
whoever they may be and no matter what high posts they might
have, are found and punished," Mitrokhin said.
Nikolay Nesterenko actively helped in the campaign for protection
of the unique natural park Utrish, where the authorities planned
to build a residence for the then President Dmitry Medvedev.
And now, largely due to Nesterenkos help, a public environmental
control post has been organised in Utrish. The activists conduct
monitoring so that no construction is held in the natural
reserve. Also Nesterenko fought against unlawful seizure of
natural reserves territories under private residences.
At the end of 2012 Nesterenko was actively involved in the
struggle with Ashot Aslanyan and companies supporting him,
who decided to unlawfully fill in the bed of the Anapka River
with a view to the subsequent development of the territory.
The unlawfulness took place with the help of the Anapa City
Administration which allocated the territory for Aslanyan
in the river bed. the Cossacks were forced to resort to extreme
measures in order to stop the destruction of the river: they
demolished an illegally installed fence around the site. This
situation is exacerbated long-standing conflict between the
Anapa Cossacks and organized criminal structures, which in
many cases are behind the illegal seizure of lands in natural
protected areas of the city. It is possible that this conflict
has caused the attempted murder on Nesterenko.
