The Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO expresses condolences
to the relatives of Khadzhimurad Kamalov, an independent publisher
of Dagestan social and political weekly "Chernovik",
killed tonight in Makhachkala, Dagestan.
This is a loss for Dagestan and all Russian journalism.
We can state with the great pain that it has been deadly
dangerous in Russia to engage in honest journalism and openly
discuss political issues.
It will be unfair if the people behind the murder go unpunished.
Four years ago our friend and colleague Farid Babaev was
also murdered in Dagestan. Those who ordered this crime have
not been found and have not been punished yet, and one of
the perpetrators of this crime even escaped punishment.
We believe that there can be no peace in Dagestan and in
Russia in general until all contract killings are investigated.
This means that Russian citizens are still living under the
guns of political gangsters.
Sergei Mitrokhin,
Chair of the YABLOKO party
