YABLOKO’s leader at The Last Autumn forum

Press Release

October 2, 2011

YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin participated in the forum of civil activists The Last Autumn taking place in the Moscow region.

In his speech YABLOKO’s leader analysed Russia’s political system. According to Mitrokhin, a specific part of the society spent time on find the differences between Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev instead of searching for the alternatives. Those calling to vote for any party other than the ruling United Russia have been falling into another extreme, Mitrokhin said.

Mitrokhin briefly analysed the performance of other parliamentary parties. He said that the Just Russia and Vladimir Zhirinovsky’s LDPR parties participated in the key event targeted at implementation of Vladimir Putin's plan on the introduction of life-long governing – these parties voted for the constitutional amendment envisaging extension of the presidential term.

In addition, Mitrokhin also noted that voting for the Kremlin's project, which is the Just Russia has always been, means giving the signal to the government that such projects are effective. When voting for the Communist Party, the society sends a different signal to the government: that people sympathise with the Stalinists (Ed. The Communist Party shares the ideas of Joseph Stalin) and are missing a “strong hand”. After that the government should inevitably increase persecutions and “tighten the screws”.

The strategy targeted at elections boycott would be, according to Sergei Mitrokhin, “an indirect vote for the ruling United Russia party". Spoiled ballots and votes of the abstaining would also add to the votes in favour of this party.

Mitrokhin also stressed that only the YABLOKO party has been in real opposition to Vladimir Putin and his policies since 1999, and offers a democratic alternative to Vladimir Putin’s policy.

Party activists collected signatures for the registration of YABLOKO in the parliamentary elections campaign during the Forum. Alexei Navlany, a blogger famous for his anti-corruption investigations, put his signature in support of YABLOK. Also about 110 participants of the Forum signed for YABLOKO.
