YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin participated in an anti-corruption rally which took place in Yekaterinburg on September 24, 2011. The topics raised at the rally were anti-corruption fight, barbaric cutting of the city parks and also support to the chairman of the Sverdlovsk branch of YABLOKO and MP Maxim Petlin.

The speakers at the rally noted that imprisonment of Maxim Petlin demonstrated that the local government were taking their revenge on Petlin due to his anti-corruption stance.

Sergei Mitrokhin stressed in his speech that YABLOKO’s lawyers had analysed the files relating to the transfer of the city park under a building site for Forum Group and proved that this was a corruption deal disclosed by Petlin.

The Forum Group company had received absolutely free of charge the lands of the park and was going to start construction works there. "It would bring the company illegal income of about 130 million rubles," Mitrokhin said.

According to Mitrokhin, the construction company enjoyed support not only of the city parliament which adopted corresponding amendments to the land laws neglecting the rulings of the statutory court, but they were also supported by the city government, namely, Alexander Yakob, head of city administration. “We can also see that even the governor sided with the corrupt officials and businessmen demanding to cancel the decision of the statutory court,” Mitrokhin said.

Mitrokhin also said that the court upheld the decision on Petlin’s pre-trial detention. "The “pocket justice” also sided with the corrupt bureaucrats and businessmen. This machinery works against Petlin because he is the only politician in the region who dared to challenge corruption ", Mitrokhin noted.

YABLOKO’s leader also said that the party would support Petlin seeking his release, and also would "engage in all Petlin’s anti-corruption initiatives”.

"I'll apply to the police and the heads of the state demanding urgent actions for elimination of corruption mechanisms in the Sverdlovsk region and Yekaterinburg,” he said.

"Yakob and not Petlin should be in prison,” he concluded.
