YABLOKO and the Vazhsky Krai public movement will conduct
pickets in support of Platon Lebedev in the town of Velsk
(where he is serving his term of imprisonment) on July 26-27.
Platon Lebedev, ex-head of Menatep, who had been sentenced
to 13 years of prison camp in the YUKOS case was convoyed
to the prison camp Ni 14 under Velsk in late June. Lebedev
applied for release on parole, and on June 26 the Velsk court
have to examine his application. YABLOKO insists that the
court should take a positive decision on the release of Platon
Lebedev.
Release of prisoners and re-examination of the YUKOS case
in courts, as well as other similar cases of Russian businessmen
will become an essential and necessary step in Russias movement
from the post-Soviet authoritarian state towards normal policies
and a European style economy functioning in the interests
of Russian citizens, runs YABLOKOs statement in support
of Lebedev.
Mitigating the terms of imprisonment for Platon Lebedev
and adopting a decision of his release on parole, the Court
of Velsk may lay foundations for the beginning of judicial
reform, make the first step towards the creation of a new
Russian court, which will be independent and governed by law,
rather than by arbitrary rule and private or group interests
under the guise of legality, noted YABLOKOs leader Sergei
Mitrokhin.
The pickets will take place in the central square of the
town from 8:30 to 12:00.
