After YABLOKOs and ecologists protests President Medvedev postponed launching of a chemical terminal at Tuapse and a masut transshipment terminal at Novorossiysk until public hearings on assessment of environmental risks of these projects.

The YABLOKO party which was one of the organisers of protests against hazardous productions welcomes this decision. However, YABLOKO also notes that it may turn out be only formal, as was the case with suspension of cutting of Khimki forest, Moscow Region, in autumn 2010 (the cutting was resumed).

The President mandated Prime Minister Putin and Governor of Krasnodar Region Alexander Tkachyov with controlling functions over finalization of the projects (by October 1) with regard to ecological expertise and public hearings.

This is the first reaction of the President on multiple public protests against such dangerous projects, Suryen Gazaryan, activist of YABLOKO and Northern Caucasus Environmental Watch, wrote in his blog.

This mandate was signed by the President after the meeting of the State Council devoted to environmental safety. On the threashold of the State Council Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting with environmentalists.

Sergei Tziplakov, Director of Greenpeace Russia, handed to the President a letter from the Northern Caucasus Environmental Watch on the situation in Tuapse. The letter also contained 7,000 signatures of the citizens. Tatiyna Tribat, YABLOKOs activist sand head of the Aqua environmental organisation also handed to President Medvedev an address on inadmissibility of construction of masut terminal in Novorossiyisk.

YABLOKO has been campaigning against Eurochims terminal in Tuapse supporting the demands of the residents of the city. The first mass-scale rally was held in 2010. In April and June 2011 YABLOKO also organised mass-scale rallies there.
