The rally was opened by a well-known journalist Lev Luriye. He called to vote at the coming elections to St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly for any party but the ruling United Russia, so that Valentina Matviyenko would not be proposed as candidate to Governor from this party.

Member of YABLOKO’s Political Committee Mikhail Amosov spoke about the need to transfer to elections of the executive authority of the city.

The organizational committee of the Democratic March included St.Petersburg branches of the youth movement Oborona (Defence), the Party of People’s Freedom, Russian People’s Democratic Union, the Republican Party of Russia, the Socio-Democratic Youth Union, the Solidarity movement and the YABLOKO party.

The organizers had to overcome the resistance of the local authorities to give their allowance to conduct a democratic demonstration in the centre of the city; where as the ruling United Russia, a Just Russia, communists and nationalists did not have such problems.
