The activists from the Irkutsk branch of YABLOKO
conducted two rallies in Irkutsk during the past weekend.
The first rally was conducted against the government’s policies
in the housing and utilities sector, raising of tariffs and
taxes. About 200 people came to the action by the Regional
Administration building.

The rally demanded from the Government to stop growth of
tariffs for small and middle-sized businesses in the housing
and utilities sector. They also unanimously adopted a resolution
which would be sent to Russian President, Prime Minister,
the Government of Russia and the Government of the Irkutsk
Region.
It should be also noted that it was one of the rare cases
when Russian businessmen participated in a rally, as after
such actions their participants usually have to face problems
with their businesses.
The second rally was conducted in protection of Lake Baikal
from pollution of the Baikal Pulp Plant owned by oligarch
Oleg Deripaska. This rally joined together about 250 people.
The speakers at the rally were advocating immediate closing
of the plump plant. Many speakers recited prose, verse and
satirical stories targeted against the Russian government
and the owner of the plant tycoon Oleg Deripaska.
Also the rally demanded to stop turning Russia into a nuclear
waste dump, stop cutting of the woods and dismiss Prime Minister
Putin and his government. All the participants of the rally
voted for adoption of such a resolution.
