Press Release
April 17, 2011

A motor rally against cement elevator took place in Pechatniki district, Moscow. The race was conducted by local residents and YABLOKO’s activists led by party leader Sergei Mitrokhin. Activists in cars with stickers “Stop Cement in Pechatniki!” collected signatures against a cement facility in a residential district.

The South Port cement elevator by the Eurocement company is situated on the bank of the Moskva River in close proximity to blocks of flats. The decision to close the facility was adopted in 2003, when he the draft plan of the district development was developed, repeated decisions were passed in 2005 and 2007. However, the facility has never stopped.

On April 13, 2011, YABLOKO conducted a picket against the cement elevator in Pechatniki during which YABLOKO's leader Sergei Mitrokhin was detained by police.

This motor race was the third joint action of the YABLOKO party and local residents. The race was conducted under the slogan "Stop the cement facility in Pechatniki!" Party flags were waving from the cars windows.

When the cars stopped by a large shopping moll for collection of signatures, a bus with a riot police was already waiting for them at the parking. However, police did not interfere with the collection of signatures, but followed the activists cars from one point of collecting signatures to another.

Local residents coming out of the moll eagerly out their signatures with a marker on a large flipchart. The activists also used special subscription lists.

At the first point for collection of signatures a young family in their own car joined the race. They stuck YABLOKO’s stickers onto their car and put a flags in the window.

Local residents complained at cement dust in the air. According to them, things left on the balconies for a short period become quickly covered by cement crust. One of the participants told the rally that he had hardly managed to wash the cement crust off his car for a day in the parking by the elevator, as the morning dew had turned the cement dust in a solid film.

Even healthy people catch respiratory diseases breathing in the cement dust, noted the local residents. And local children often suffer from rhinitis, pharyngitis, bronchial asthma and skin diseases.

In a few hours the activists managed to collect over 500 signatures of local residents. The lists of signatures will be sent to the Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin. The first package consisting of 854 signatures was sent to the Moscow Mayor together with a letter from YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin where he called the Mayor to immediately relocate the elevator.
