1,500 people came to environmental rally in Tuapse

Press Release

1,500 people came to environmental rally in Tuapse against launching of a terminal for transshipment of chemical fertilizers of the Eurochom company. The action is organised by the Green Russia faction of the YABLOKO Party with support of the North Caucasus Environmental Watch.

Eurochim’s terminal is built in the centre of the city. An unlawful so-called “pilot” transshipment of futilisers organised by Eurochim last spring led to a situation when all the neighbouring territories were covered by chemical dust. This provoked a public outburst in Tuapse – the city dwellers were absolutely against launching of such a hazardous facility in the city. The action was conducted in view of launching of the terminal in short term.

The rally was opened by a song against launching of the terminal written by one of the local residents.

Euney Vitishko, leader of the local branch of YABLOKO, who was the first to speak at the rally, called the residents to jointly stop the potential environmental disaster connected with the launch of the terminal.

YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin also made a speech at the rally. “I have an impression now that the authorities decided to divide the Black Sea coast into several zones: one, where Eurochim, Rosneft and other oligarchic structures earn their profits at the expense of health of local residents, and the second zone for construction of cottages and palaces for bureaucrats and oligarchs,” Mitrokhin said. He promised to send an address to President Medvedev demanding to prohibit the launch of the terminal.

Representative of public organisations also poke about other urgent environmental problems of the Tuapse area: negative influence on the environment of Rosneft’s oil transshipment facilities, including reconstruction of Rosneft facilities conducted with violation of the law. Also the residents expressed their concerns with the plans of oil extraction (on the shelf by the Tuapse coast), problems of the dump at the Kadosh Cape and other problems.
