The World Wide Fund for Nature Russia (WWF Russia) appealed
to Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev to investigate
the actions of the authorities when members of the YABLOKO
party and environmentalists were detained during the “protest
picnic” by “Tkachyov’s [Governor of the Krasnodar Area] palace”.
"WWF calls to the Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev
demanding to conduct an official investigation of the actions
of police officers involved in the attack against environmentalists",
runs the WWF statement.
"It is amazing that the authorities chose a violent
unlawful way of resolution of the accumulated problems in
the region. This is a dead way exercised by a violent, rather
than democratic state demonstrating complete disregard to
the will of its citizens," states the WWF.
Earlier YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin also sent an appeal
to the head of the Interior Ministry stating that protecting
illegal constructions law enforcement officers had not only
violated the Russian law, but also the internal regulations
of the Ministry.
He also forwarded appeals Russian Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin
and head of the Presdiential Commission on Human Rights Alexander
Fedotov also informing them about unacceptable conditions
in the prison where the activists have been kept.
Mitrokhin also appealed to Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika
demanding to adopt measures in his disposal against Governor
of the Krasnodar Region Alexander Tkachyov who in violation
of the law had built his country house on the forest land
and fenced public territories. Also cuttings of the unique
endemic Pitsunda pine included into the Red Book and protected
by the state were made during construction works.
