YABLOKO launches election campaign in the Sebezhsky District of the Pskov Region

Press Release
August 16, 2010

On August 15 Lev Shlosberg, Chair of the Pskov branch of the YABLOKO party, member of YABLOKO’s Bureau and candidate to the post of the head of Sebezhsky District of the Pskov Region and Sergei Semyonov, Director of a Sebezhsky college, submitted documents for registration of the party in the elections of the head of Sebezhsky District and the Legislative Assembly of the district which will take place on October 10, 2010.

YABLOKO was the first party to submit documents to the territorial electoral commission.

The elections to the Legislative Assembly of Sebezhsky Distrcit will for the first time take place in accordance with the mixed system; eight deputies out of 15 will be elected in accordance with political parties lists and seven deputies on single-mandate electoral districts. Number of voters in the district amounts to 16,951.
The Pskov branch of YABLOKO submitted a list of nine candidates. The list is topped by collage director Sergei Semyonov, ex-head of the Education Department of the District Administration Valentina Konovalova and military pensioner Mikhail Alexandrov.

Lev Shlosberg, head of the regional party branch, noted that social and political situation in the district remains very complicated and arises much concern. “The forces acting outside the framework of law and whose economic tasks have nothing to do with the state or public interests considerably interfere political developments in the district. This challenges not only lawful and fair elections, but even the whole way of living in the Sebezhsky Distrcit”, Shlosberg noted.

“Taking into account all the circumstances, the Regional Council of the regional branch of the party adopted a decision on my participation in the elections as Chair of the regional branch and member of the Bureau of the party. Nominating my candidacy we demonstrate to the criminal community of the Sebezhsky District that there is no way for any local shadow election campaign… This will be a regional political election campaign which will be in the focus of public and media attention. Depending on the circumstances this campaign can get a public status of a federal election campaign. In this campaign I am protecting my team mates. This is a principled position, and we had enough grounds for adopting of such a decision. The YABLOKO party guarantees to all the members of the team, candidates in elections in the Sebezhsky District its political and legal protection. If needed all the forces of the party, including applications to regional and federal law enforcement bodies will be involved for such a defence,” Schlosberg said. He also added that pressure on elections commissions is inadmissible and unlawful, and Russian law envisages criminal persecution for such actions.

YABLOKO is ready to undertake responsibility for the development of the district and improvement of situation there, Shlosberg concluded.
