Mitrokhin is facing 15 days of arrest. Russia’s Ombudsman notified of detentions in Khimki

Press Release
August 2, 2010

YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin informed Russia’s Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin of today’s violent detention of the greens defending the Khimki Forest.

Mitrokhin let Lukin know all the details from the local police department where he was escorted with the other detained. Mitrokhin also told Lukin about police surveillance of the ecologists and pressure on their relatives. Lukin promised to get in touch with the heads of the Internal Affairs on the Moscow Region so that to resolve the situation. However, Mitrokhin did not manage to end his conversation with Lukin, as police in violation of the law confiscated all the personal belongings and mobile phones of the detained.

The greens and Sergei Mitrokhin are going to file a collective complaint on the actions of the police to Russia’s Ombudsman and Public Prosecutor General.

The police is putting forward a charge of a “violation of a prescribed order in holding a rally, demonstration or picketing” in accordance with Article 20.2 of the Administrative Violations Code. In addition Mitrokhin is charged with “disobeying the police” (Article 19.3) which involves 15 days of arrest.

“The second charge was fabricated right after I demanded to release me, as the first charge had already been announced,” Mitrokhin said. He also noted that the second charge may be needed so that to convoy him to court.

It should be also noted that the six activists with the same charges and detained together with Mitrokhin have been still kept in the police department for over three hours already in violation of the law.
