More activists detained in the Khimki Forest

Press Release
July 31, 2010

One of the defenders of the Khimki Forest Gennadi Rogozin was detained by police for the second time on July 31.

On July 28 the riot police (OMON) broke into the defenders’ camp. Nine ecologists were kept in the police department throughout the whole night and driven to court the following morning. However, the judge heard only one case – that of Elena Maksimova – the rest were released without issuing any notifications of summoning them to court to some other date.

On the same evening the activists reported being under police surveillance. Policemen visited the activists’ homes and questioning their next-of-kin about the whereabouts of the activists.

Euvgenia Chirikova, leader of the defenders of the forest, told yesterday to YABLOKO’s Press Service that the activists were concerned about provocations and were not going to return to their homes until getting explanations from the police.

Alos police began using violence against the defenders trying to disperse them. Thus, on July 31 one of the policemen used violence against YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin for his refusal to leave the site pushing him hard and making him fall on the ground, thus injuring his arm. Mitrokhin filed an application to the Investigation Committee stating “abuse of power” by police.

On Tuesday YABLOKO plans to conduct picketing in front of the Chief Directorate of Internal Affairs of the Moscow Region (address: Nikitskiy pereulok 3) against unlawful action of the police in Khimki. The picket will begin at 11 a.m.
