The liberal 2008 Free Choice Committee is set to sue the authorities over
the 2003 parliamentary elections that the group says were invalid. In its
law suit, which committee member and former presidential candidate Irina
Khakamada said would be filed next week with the Supreme Court, the group
has joined forces with other opposition groups to demand that the elections
be annulled.
The committee reached an agreement Monday night with the liberal Yabloko
party and the Communist Party, both of which effectively lost the State
Duma elections last December, to file the lawsuit jointly, the Interfax
news agency reported.
Individuals from the 2008 Committee, including Duma deputy Vladimir
Ryzhkov, will also be among the plaintiffs.
The committee was formed after the elections as a pledge to make the
next presidential elections fair, open and democratic.
