Friends and colleagues of journalist and human rights
activist Yuri Schekochikhin
continue their investigation into the circumstances behind his death. Head
of the investigative department of Novaya Gazeta Roman Shleinov told Ekho
Moskvi radio Station that "no indisputable facts have been found so
far."
At the same time, according to Shleinov, "we do have expertise
based on materials from Great Britain." "Unfortunately Russia
refused to grant the necessary materials even to relatives of Yuri Schekochikhin,
his son in particular, required to conduct an independent investigation,
explained Shleinov. - Well-known Western experts involved in the investigation
are indignant about this."
“However, we cannot draw any definite conclusions, - added Shleinov.
– Yuri Petrovich had a great number of enemies, but no one is interested
here in making the situation transparent and clear."
"No one has even conducted a proper investigation. [Yuri Schekochikhin]
was a person with such a name that even the Prosecutor General spoke to
him, but when he died all the materials and the investigation were transferred
to the ordinary local prosecutor's office. They did all they could - we
have to be fair about them - but failed to overcome the barrier set for
them," added Shleinov.
"We are continuing doing all we can here, but we cannot give any
forecasts," concluded Shleinov.
Journalist and human rights activist Yuri Schekochikhin died on July
3, 2003 in the reanimation ward of the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow.
The colleagues of the journalist and the All-Russia Movement "For
the Human Rights", and the YABLOKO party considered it necessary
to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the death of Yuri
Schekochikhin and find out in particular what caused the allergy syndrome
which resulted in the death of the journalist.
