| MOSCOW, August 31 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian Central Electoral
Commission (CEC) on Tuesday recommended legislators to consider the possibility
to broaden women's participation in elections to the State Duma.
The commission proposes including 30 percent of women in party lists
for elections.
Central Electoral Commission member Yelena Dubrovina, a representative
of the Yabloko party, put forth the proposal during the discussion on
electoral legislation changes at the meeting on Tuesday.
Although the move aroused criticism from other CEC members, it was
supported by CEC head Alexander Veshnyakov.
As a result, the proposal on broader participation of women in elections
to the State Duma was included in the issues to be submitted for broad
public discussion.
Special parliamentary hearings on the electoral legislation reform
are planned for November.
