An open letter to all the citizens of Russia on
an end to the war in Chechnya was signed by 60 prominent figures
of arts and science in Russia. The signatories included Fazil Iskander,
Vladimir Voinovich, Viktor Erofeev, Ludimila Ulitskaya, Bella Akhmadulina,
Sergei Gandlevsky, Viktor Shenderovich, Pyotr Todorovskiy, Mark
Rozovskiy, Yuri Norshtein, Alexander Filippenko, Inna Churikova,
Liya Akhedzhakova, Sergei Yursky, Garry Kasparov, Georgy Chistyakov,
Leonid Batkin, Alexei Yablokov. The letter entitled "Let Us
Join Together to Stop the War in Chechnya" states that the
citizens of Russia should "do away with passivity and indifference"
and openly express their desire for peace, as the referendum on
the Constitution of Chechnya will not establish peace in the republic.
According to Viktor Shenderovich who was presenting the letter,
the Russian authorities should begin talks with the separatists
to achieve peace in Chechnya.
