SAINT PETERSBURG, May 20. The Russian Ministry for
Natural Resources has asked the government to approve its Arctic
shelf exploration programme, stating that there are several Western
oil companies ready to invest. Statoil, Norsk Hydro, Total
and Russia's Gazprom and Yukos are all interested in participating
in the tenders to acquire a portion of the oil and gas on the
Russian arctic shelf.
The government announced that there woud be no approval prior
to the publication of its global energy strategy, which is supposed
to be published soon. The ministry hopes that the tenders can
be completed before October.
