An exhibition devoted to the 10th anniversary of the YABLOKO party opened in Moscow

Moscow, October 21, 2003. A documentary exhibition devoted to the 10th anniversary of the Russian Democratic Party YABLOKO opened in Moscow today. The exhibition is being held in the Central Museum of Modern History of Russia.

The date, October 21, 1993, when the electoral bloc "Yavlinsky-Boldyrev-Lukin" was registered [for the parliamentary elections], is considered to be YABLOKO's birthday. At the elections in December 1993 the bloc obtained 4.2 million votes, leading to the creation of an independent faction in the State Duma. The Public Association YABLOKO was formed in January 1995 and was transformed into the Russian Democratic Party YABLOKO in December 2001. Over the past 10 years YABLOKO has participated in five federal and several dozen regional elections. At present YABLOKO has 65,000 members.

In a speech at the opening of the exhibition YABLOKO leader Grigory Yavlinsky confirmed the intention of the party to adhere to the political path it had chosen 10 years ago, with compliance to democratic values and liberties. According to the party leader, YABLOKO will remain in opposition to the authorities until the government "resolves three tasks: the creation of a free civil society in Russia, the building of a competitive market economy and the provision of social rights and guarantees for all Russian citizens." "Our party looks to the future with confidence and will do all it can to transform Russia into a free, rich and strong country,"- said Yavlinsky.
