Vladimir Lukin, member of the Yabloko faction, on halting the broadcasting of TV-6

January 23, 2002

"For the first time since Brezhnev's period I have a feeling of constant and lasting shame for my country." This was the reaction of the Deputy Speaker of the State Duma and member of the Yabloko faction Vladimir Lukin to the closure of the TV-6 television channel. Lukin expressed his opinion on the Ekho Moskvi radio station.

The TV-6 television channel was "the only channel to express an independent position on a number of issues, even if I sometimes disagreed with them," stressed Lukin.

The situation around TV-6 and a number of other events inside the country make us presume that "Russia’s authorities either do not have any strategy or don't completely realise what they are doing," added the Deputy Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation. He also expressed his concern that Russia's domestic policy could damage the attitude to Russia internationally.

"I am completely aware that the image of Russia and of our President today will face significant difficulties, and that a significant part of the accumulated political capital will now have been spent," noted Lukin.

"I want our mass media to be allowed to function in conditions where they could freely express their opinions. Only then the popularity of our leaders would be valuable and authentic," added Lukin. At the same time he also recognised that recently he had "heard so much political hypocrisy" and he had begun to "strongly doubt" that the situation could change for the better.
