The Russian liberal Yabloko party plans to hold
a referendum in Russia on the issue of spent nuclear fuel imports
in December 2001 or in January 2002, ABN reports. It was decided
at the last meeting of St. Petersburg department of the party
to hold a referendum in Russia to support Yabloko’s position
against spent nuclear fuel imports. Yabloko representatives stated
its position soon after the Russian State Duma had approved the
spent nuclear fuel imports: they stated that they would hold a
referendum to ban the storage of foreign spent nuclear fuel in
Russia. The most recent amendments to Russian laws permit the
storage of spent nuclear fuel in Russia and maintenance after
reprocessing in the country.
