Spent nuclear fuel comes to Russia

Moskovskiy Komsomoletz, October 18, 2001

“The deputies have a chance to prevent Russian from being transformed into an international nuclear dump.” This was the slogan of the press conference organised by representatives of Yabloko, “Russia’s Regions” and representatives of the green movement.

According to the Yabloko deputy Sergei Mitrokhin, the faction aims to postpone the vote on the new law “On Protection of the Environment”, as this draft law requires multiple amendments. If this does not happen and the law is adopted, the opponents of nuclear fuel imports propose organising a referendum and the dissemination throughout Russia of a leaflet naming the deputies who approved the transformation of Russia into a nuclear dump. The pilot issue of “compromising materials” is already complete.

At the same time, despite careful concealment of any information regarding the terms of the mport and places of storage of spent nuclear fuel, it became known that the first echelon with the waste would reach Russia from Bulgaria, crossing Romania and Ukraine. In addition to land transportation, sea routes will also be used – via Korea, Taiwan and Japan. The terminals for storage of spent nuclear fuel are built in Murmansk, Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg and Dudinka. Incidentally, owing to the threat of terrorism, America’s authorities are already adopting measures to stop the transportation of radio-active waste through its territory.
