St. Petersburg. The new law on parties will not affect Yabloko, but may
affect the political system of Russia, said the First Deputy Head of the Yabloko
faction in the State Duma of the RF Sergei Ivanenko. Ivanenko added that the faction
had prepared a package of amendments to the draft law, amounting to over 100 pages of
text. One of the amendments proposed by Yabloko concerns abolition of state
financing for political parties and abolition of the control of the law enforcement
agencies over the political parties.
Ivanenko also noted that the recent regional elections demonstrated that
“the positions of Yabloko in the regions are quite strong”. Even though none
of the governors are members of Yabloko to datet, the heads of six regions were
elected with the support of Yabloko (agreements, including those on staff
appointments, were concluded with them). In addition Yabloko won the elections of mayors in
ten cities and also achieved great success at local government elections. Ivanenko
stressed that “the local government elections tend to be more honest than the
elections at higher levels.”
