The leaders of Yabloko and the Union of Right-Wing Yabloko's representative thinks that raising the question of Lenin's burial is ill-timed
13.12.2000 |
The First Deputy Head of the Yabloko faction Sergei Ivanenko thinks that the question of burying Lenin's body should be solved in accordance with Christian tradition, but that today is an inopportune moment to do so. Commenting to journalists on December 13, 2000, on the initiative of the SPS faction to create a state commission for establishing a memorial complex at the Lenin's Mausoleum to remember the victims of the 20th century and to resolve as part of the commission’s task the issue of burying Lenin's body, Ivanenko noted that "this is the right decision, but it is badly timed”. According to Ivanenko, the initiative of the Union of Right-Wing Forces represents "a political declaration", but even in its present form "such a declaration should be better balanced, to prevent confrontation in our society". The representative of Yabloko expressed doubts that the State Duma would support this initiative. The Yabloko faction, noted Ivanenko, would permit a free vote on this issue. However, added Ivanenko, the adoption of such a decision does not mean that Yabloko has "principal differences with the Union of Right-Wing Forces", as on other issues, "including very important issues" both the factions had also previously held differences. In other words, said Sergei Ivanenko, there is no questions of a split within the coalition. Based on Interfax reports.
