The Russian historical-educational, protector of civil
rights and charitable society "Memorial" has decided to
"support Grigory Yavlinsky at the forthcoming presidential
elections." The "Memorial" reported this decision in its
address to the civil organisations of Russia published in
Moscow on March 15.
The Board of the "Memorial" thinks that on 26 March the
country will have to choose between democracy and authoritarian
rule, a law-governed state and police order. It states in
its message "Yavlinsky is the only candidate that we can
state with certainty represents the democratic prospects
of the country at the elections." It goes on: "In a certain
sense he represents at the elections all of Russian democracy
and civil society, rather than only a political party."
The authors of the message disagree with the position of
individuals who "hesitate as to whether they should give
their votes to Yavlinsky, simply because, according to a
wide-spread (and partially ingrained) opinion, Yavlinsky's
chances to succeed are low" and even "are considering about
not taking part in the present elections owing to the lack
of prospects for democracy there." They state that "a persuasive
demonstration of political solidarity can really influence
the fate of freedom in Russia through the results of the
elections".
