| The [federal] centre should support Aslambek Aslakhanov
at the presidential
elections in Chechnya. This is the point of view of a well-known political
scientist Andrei Piontkovsky. There are no good decisions concerning
Chechnya. We have made so many mistakes there. However, there is only one
way out of the crisis which deteriorated with the assassination of Akhmad
Kadyrov to propose the candidacy of Aslambek Aslakhanov. Piontkovsky also
thinks that Aslakhanov possesses two important qualities required to rule
the problematic region: He is obviously loyal to Moscow and enjoys the
trust
of most of the population in Chechnya. We made a huge error when we forced
Aslakhanov to abandon the presidential race in favour of Kadyrov. But this
time we have to support him.
However, the first steps of the federal authorities after the Sunday
act of
terror demonstrate, according to Pointkovsky, that there will be changes
only for the worse: It is a strange scene when the President of the RF
receives a strange guy in a sport suit and appoints him first vice-premier.
As Mr. Abramov came to Chechnya by chance, this scene demonstrates that
they
are considering implementing a succession model. However, here this model
does not function. If Ahmad Kadyrov enjoyed at least some authority in
Chechnya, whereas his son does not possess such authority: he is known
as a
terrible bandit. It would be catastrophic if the future of Chechnya were
entrusted to such a person.
However, Piontkovsky is not inclined to make far-fetched conclusions
on the
basis of the first reaction of the authorities: Putin has always reacted
painfully and emotionally to the topic of the Chechnya. Most likely, when
the first shock is over, he will adopt the correct decision.
