The Yabloko and the Union of Right-Wing Forces faction express their indignation at the decision of the State Duma to create a commission on the problem of imports of nuclear waste exclusively from the deputies supporting this draft

Moscow, October 24, 2001, MK-Novosti

The Yabloko faction expresses its indignation at the decision of the State Duma which excluded from the commission on the problem of imports of nuclear waste the representative from the Union of Right-Wing Forces (SPS) and Yabloko," Deputy Head of the Yabloko faction Sergei Ivanenko told journalists during the interval between the meetings of the lower chamber.

Ivanenko also stressed that these two faction had voted against the imports of spent nuclear fuel into Russia, whereas today the Duma "had been transformed into a department of the Presidential Administration: it does not want to hear anything, know anything and make decisions." Further Ivanenko expressed his hope that at the beginning of next year it would be possible to start collecting signatures for the referendum on the problem of imports of spent nuclear fuel into Russia.

The leader of the SPS faction of the State Duma Boris Nemtsov also told journalists that the faction categorically opposed the law on the imports of spent nuclear fuel, but the "most impertinent thing happened today", when none of the deputies who openly speak against the imports of nuclear waste into Russia were included in the commission. "We think that the Duma demonstrated its weakness and helplessness," stated Nemtsov.
