Russian President should find out Muscovites’ attitude to the new candidate on the post of the Mayor of Moscow

Press Release
October 1, 2010

YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin said that Russian President should order a sociological survey before appointing a new Mayor of Moscow. The survey will show the attitude of the Muscovites to the candidates proposed by the progovernmental United Russia party.

“The present practices of appointing regional heads demonstrated its complete failure. After the dismissal of Yuri Luzhkov the same party bearing full responsibility for Luzhkov’s policies proposes a new candidacy,” Mitrokhin noted.

Sergei Mitrokhin called such situation “absurd”. YABLOKO’s leader proposed that the candidates nominated by the United Russia should answer the following questions by the Muscovites:

- whether they are going to conduct a corruption check of the bureaucrats from the central apparat and all the departments of the Moscow government,
- whether they are going to preserve social guarantees to the pensioners and the poor,
- whether the new Mayor will be ready to send the adopted and much disputed General Plan of Moscow Development confirming the previous practices of the city development to revision,
- whether the new mayor will return to the Moscow City Duma and municipal councils their controlling proxies they lost under Luzhkov,
- whether the new mayor is going to release economic and financial data on all the city monopolies, as well as other questions.

After the candidates answer all these questions it will be reasonable to conduct a sociological survey which will show the preference of the Muscovites.
