Press Release

On September 29 YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin visited Chelyabinsk where he met with students of the Urals Academy of State Service and workers of the Polyot plant, as well as participated in the mourning action held in commemoration of nuclear explosion at the Mayak plant.

At the meeting with the students Mitrokhin spoke about the need to transfer to professional army and abolishment of military conscription. He also criticized the intentions of the military to increase the age for conscription from 27 to 30 years of age, and YABLOKO is going to resist these plans.

Then YABLOKO’s leader met with the workers of Polyot plant. According to Mitrokhin, this hi-tech production is in a deplorable state.

“Our President speaks about innovations, billions are transferred for nanotechnologies, Skolokovo (Ed. A Russian Silicon Valley) headed by oligarchs is created, meanwhile such hi-tech productions as your plant are left without support,” Mitrokhin said. According to Mitrokhin, hi-tech productions in the military industrial complex need state support in the first hand, as they have a “good basis left from the Soviet period” and “continue keeping their high intellectual potential”.

Also Sergei Mitrokhin participated in the mourning ceremony devoted to the anniversary of explosion at the Mayak nuclear plant. The participants of the action floated candles on the river Miass contaminated with radioactive waste.

“This event reminds us of our present problems: people are still living in contaminated territories and only recently the authorities have begun resettling people from there,” Mitrokhin said. He also noted that different violations take place at such resettlements and YABLOKO would strive so that all the victims of the nuclear explosion would get compensations.
