YABLOKO will conduct an action against imports of nuclear
waste from Germany into Russia by the German Embassy in Moscow
on August 24, at 1 p.m. It is planned that 951 fuel slugs
from a research nuclear reactor from Rossendorf near Drezden
will be sent to Novouralsk, Russia.
The participants of the action are going to hand to the Ambassador
their address to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and German
two federal ministers – Economic Minister Reiner Bruederle
and Minister of Environment Norbert Ruetten – with a request
to abolish nuclear waste imports into Russia. According to
German laws, the federal government has the right to veto
the decisions adopted by the lands governments.
The address stresses that “the Russian authorities can not
guarantee safe transportation of the waste across Russia,
as well as their storage, processing and further storage.”
“Acts of terror in Russia, high corruption in the law enforcement,
as well as, forest fires, such as has those that have taken
place recently, can turn nuclear waste into a source of nuclear
contamination not only for Russian citizens, but also for
Europeans,” runs the letter.
YABLOKO’s activists are going to demonstrate potential threats
for transportation of hazardous load in a special map. The
activists will also use improvised chemical defence equipment
during the action.
Address: Moscow, Mosfilmovskaya 56 (metro stations Universitet
or Kievskaya).
