15,000 prisoners can burn alive

Press Release
August 9, 2010

YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin demands from Minister of Extraordinary Situations Sergei Shoigu and President of the Republic of Mordovia Nikolai Merkushkin to adopt urgent measures for evacuation of the prisoners from the Potma prison camp encircled by forest fires.

At present Mitrokhin is preparing an application to the Public Prosecutor demanding to conduct an audit on liquidation of the Potma-Barashyevo railroad which connected over 20 camps, and basing on the results of the audit to file a criminal case against the heads of the Federal Service for Execution of Punishment. Due to dismantling of the railroad 15,000 prisoners can die in fires.

In 2006 the Potma-Barashyevo railroad connecting over 20 Mordovian prison-camps was liquidated following the order of the Federal Service for Execution of Punishment. On Saturday, August 7, forests were in fire in 200 meters from the prison camp No 7 by Sosnovka village of Zub-Polyansky District of the republic. According to the information coming from Mordovia, a train was sent to Potma for evacuation of prisoners, however, the railroad turned out to be dismantled, in spite of the fact that this railroad was indicated as functioning on the map of Ministry of Extraordinary Situation.

A commission for investigation of the events has been created. Meanwhile 15,000 prisoners are in constant danger as it is impossible to evacuate them by ground transport.
