Young liberals from all over the world to gather in St.Petersburg

An Executive Committee meeting and an Extraordinary meeting of the General Assembly of International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) will take place in St.Petersburg on August 6-8. Representatives from over 40 countries will come to St.Petersburg.

The meeting will be opened by Bart Woord, IFLRY President, Nikolai Rybakov, deputy head of St.Petersburg YABLOKO’s branch and Alexander Gudimov, Chair of St.Petersburg Youth YABLOKO. The participants will discuss development of democracy and liberalism.

Several panels will be devoted to Russia:

- Human Rights and Democracy in Russia (August 6 at 6-7 p.m.). Speakers: professor of the Euroepan University Dr.Nikita Lomakin, Natalya Evdokimova, Executive Secretary of St.Petersburg Human Rights Council, Sasha Tamm, head of the Moscow Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Jens Christian Lutken, head of Danish Initiative in Support of Freedom and Democracy.

- Understanding the Kremlin (August 7 at 2-4 p.m.). Speakers: Professor from the Higher School of People’s Arts Dr.Oleg Ilyin and Professor of Political Science of St.Petersburg University Rashid Gaiutdinov.

- Non-violent Reisitance (August 7 at 2-4 p.m.). Speakers political psychologist Alexei Shustov and public activist Alexander Khanuman.

- Russia in the 21st Century (August 8 at 10-11 a.m.). Speaker public activist Gerigory Liparteliani.

The participants of the GA will also discuss the current issues of IFLRY and adopt a number of resolutions.

The EC and GA meetings will be preceeded by a seminar You(th) Are Part of the Discussion, which started on August 2.

IFLRY - International Federation of Liberal Youth was established in 1979 and is the successor of the World Federation of Liberal and Radical Youth (created in 1947). IFLRY joins together over 90 organisations from all the continents. IFLRY policies are based on the belief in the universality and indivisibility of human rights, free and tolerant society without any form of discrimination, with equal opportunities, respect for the individual and the minorities. According to the federation, these goals can only be reached through a democratic system of governance.
As liberals and radicals IFLRY is in favour of a market economy operating within the limits of a fair distribution of wealth and ecological sustainability. IFLRY and YABLOKO are full-fledged members of Liberal International.

IFLRY has been closely cooperating with the Youth YABLOKO for several years.

EC and GA meetings will take place in the hotel “St.Petersburg” (Pirogovskaya embankment 5/2). The opening will take place on August 6 at 5 p.m.
