Investigation of Yuri Schekochikhin’s death should go on

Statement by the YABLOKO party

July 3, 2010

July 3 marks seven years since the death of an outstanding journalist and fighter against corruption Yuri Schekochikhin

On this day the Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO considers it necessary to remind to Russia’s leadership that the circumstances of the death of Yuri Schekochikhin have not been determined.

The decision on termination of the investigation adopted by the Investigation Committee of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2009 demonstrates inability or lack of desire of the present Russian state to conduct a full-fledged investigation.

The law enforcement has not produced convincing answers on the questions from Yuri’s relatives, colleagues and concerned citizens for these seven years. In particular,

- not all the witnesses have been interrogated, however, testimony from some of them could have cleared up the circumstances of the tragedy;
- the testimonies of the doctors who examined Yuri demonstrate unexplained contradictions;
- the fact of disappearance of medical documents forwarded from the hospital to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2003 has not been investigated and the documents have not been found.

We can not rule out that some top officials may be interacting the investigation of the cause of death of Yuri Schekochikhin.

We demand from the President of Russia to raise before the Public Prosecutor and the Investigation Committee the issue of canceling decision on closing the criminal case on the death of Yuri Schekochikhin.

Sergei Mitrokhin,
Chair of the YABLOKO party
