On provocation of the United Russia against YABLOKO’s activists

Statement of the Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO
November 12, 2009

The YABLOKO party expresses its categorical protest in connection with provocations and acts of pressure and mobbing of the party branches in a number of regions.

On November 8, 2009, there was a fire in the regional branch of the United Russia party in Penza. According to preliminary information of the interior, unknown persons threw flame fluid in the window.

There events became a motive to political mobbing of activists from oppositional parties and movements by the United Russia at participation of the interior.

At night on the 8th of October unlawful searches in the homes of YABLOKO members and allies took place. Seven activists were victims of lawlessness. Notebooks, party and publicistic materials, other things having no relation to the arson were confiscated.

The YABLOKO party considers statements of the United Russia leaders and actions of the interior, as well as their accusations in the address of opposition parties in extremism as persecution of the dissenting and intimidation of politically active citizens.

This is a logical consequence of the campaign against regional party branches in Krasnodar and Saratov. In the beginning of 2009, the law enforcement bodies, including services for counteraction to extremism, demanded from YABLOKO’s activists complete information on performance of their organisations, including party’s plans and programmes, the lists of the decision-making bodies and party members with indication of their places of residence and work. Such actions mean that the Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO is assessed as a potentially extremist organisation, which is arbitrary rule in itself. Collection of private information on the citizens by the secret services without consent of these persons is a grave violation of the Constitution of the Russian Federation and virtually restores political secret services.

YABLOKO considers such actions against a registered legally performing political party as
a prologue to political reprisals.

The YABLOKO party lays full responsibility for incitement of political extremism against opposition political parties on the United Russia party and the authorities that allow making law enforcement bodies an instrument of political pressure.

The YABLOKO party demands from Public Prosecutor General and the Interior Ministry to stop reprisals against the activists and launch investigation of unlawful actions of the interior.

We shall use all the possibilities we dispose of for protection of our activists.

Sergei Mitrokhin,
Chair of the YABLOKO party
