Youth organisation of YABLOKO to conduct actions in memory of Anna Politkovskaya and for protection of freedom of speech

On October 7, 2009, it will be three years since death of renowned journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya. Nation-wide actions in memory of Anna Politkovskaya and in protection of freedom of speech will take place on the initiative of the Youth YABLOKO.


YABLOKO’s activists will conduct actions by Public Prosecutor offices in different Russian regions under the slogan “Silence! Or you’ll be killed?” They will distribute leaflets informing on the situation with freedom of speech in Russia and calling to stop and investigate murders of journalists.


Actions in memory of Anna Politkovskaya will take place in different regions. People will light candles and lay flowers to photographs of Anna.


In Yekaterinburg a picket will take place by the Public Prosecutor General Office in the Ural Federal District (at the address ul.Pushkina 3, at 1 p.m.). An action in memory of Anna organised by the Youth YABLOKO and the Memorial Society will take place by the memorial to the founders of the city at 5 p.m. There will be no speeches, placards or slogans, only flowers and candles.


In St.Petersburg the action in protection of the freedom of speech will take place by the Public Prosecutor Office at 2 p.m. “For the past ten years Russia has been rated second as of the number of murders of journalists. Russia’s freedom of speech index is 141, placing the country between Mexico and Ethiopia,” such data are given in YABLOKO’s leaflets. An action in memory of Anna Politkovskaya will take place by the Solovetsky Stone at Troitskaya square at 7 p.m.


In Zlatoust a memory action will take place in the Public Garden in the center of the city at 6 p.m. In Kostroma YABLOKO’s activists will distribute leaflets with information on the situation with freedom of speech in Russia. Memory actions with participation the Youth YABLOKO will also take place in Omsk, Orenburg, Novosibirsk and Saratov.


Young YABLOKO’s activists also turned to their partners from the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) with a request to support the action in protection of freedom of speech in Russia. It has been already announced that such actions will take place in Holland and Lithuania.
