On September 8 round table “Preservation of Historical Heritage: Public Voice” took place in the Moscow City Duma. The round table was organised by Eugeni Bunimovich, Chair of the Moscow City Duma Commission for Education and Science and member of the YABLOKO faction.

Representatives of different public organisations, Moscow museums, architects, artists and journalists participated in the discussion. The discussion evolved around the present Moscow laws for preservation of historical and cultural heritage.

Opening the discussion Eugeni Bunimovich asked the audience to voice their proposals that the YABLOKO faction could submit as amendments to the law on historical and cultural heritage.

Eugeni Bunimovich stressed that the problems of preservation of historical heritage of Moscow are urgent and complex, and can be solved only by joining the efforts of public organisations and governments. According to Bunimovich, the Moscow government began listening to the public voice. Several frozen construction projects that had to replace historical sites represent the contribution of the citizens to the preservation of Moscow.

Several definite proposals prohibiting some types of construction works in historical buildings (capital construction and reconstruction works), introducing mandatory insurance of the cultural heritage and a mechanism of sanctions in case of violations were worked out during the discussion.
