Today
on September 8, Youth YABLOKO organisation of St.Petersburg
made a statement where it expressed concern about the situation
developing around social orphanage Zhizn (Life) in St.Petersburg.
The orphanage can be ousted out of its building, as obviously
some wealthy investors came to liking these premises.
The Youth YABLOKO sent the statement to Valentina Matviyenko,
Governor of St.Petersburg, and Alexei Golovan, Ombudsman for
Children’s Rights.
Orphanage Zhizn has been functioning for 12 years already
and become home for several hundred children. Due to the wonderful
teachers working in this orphanage the children despite their
hard experiences grow well-educated and further achieve success
in many spheres. Voluntary donations made possible creation
of good living conditions (cozy bedrooms – each for two children,
large dining room, personal computers, games); whereas the
municipal budget has not allotted any funds to the orphanage.
If the orphanage is closed, the children will have to go
to “ordinary” orphanages. The situation looks very strange
especially in the light of such a fact that in 2005 Governor
Valentina Matviyenko highly assessed the work of the teachers,
when the orphanage was awarded For the Acts of Mercy prize.
“We are calling the municipal authorities to either give
new premises for the orphanage or to help in solution of problems
with the present building,” runs the statement.
