Investigation of the accident with the Kursk submarine would a step towards responsible governing

Statement of the YABLOKO party

August 12, 2009

The Russian United Democratic Party YABLOKO proposes to conduct objective investigation of the causes leading to the accident with the Kursk submarine and the actions of the officials during the rescue operation. We should conduct such investigation so that to at least to pay tribute to the dead sailors.

The fact that such investigation was not conducted at once conditioned a whole range of tragic accidents in the navy.

The lack of such investigation also demonstrates complete social irresponsibility of our state.

In general the only reliable information the citizens of Russia have on the submarine is that “it sank” and the rescue operation watched by the country for several days was acknowledged hopeless from the very beginning.

The Kursk tragedy turned into a touchstone for the state officials, so that bureaucrats of all levels, both military and civil, realised that lives and sufferings of people was of less value for the state government compared to the “state interests”. This conditioned further behaviour patterns of the state officials in other critical situations, such as Nord-Ost and Beslan tragedies.

Open public investigation of the reasons behind the Kursk accident is absolutely required for changing of the relationships between the state and the society in Russia.

We should make such a step so that to pay tribute to the dead sailors, their relatives and next to kin, and so that to prevent such accidents in the future.

Sergei Mitrokhin
Chairman of the YABLOKO party
