Women constitute 43% (21 women out of 49 candidates) in the
list of candidates to the Moscow City Duma approved by the
conference of the Moscow branch of YABLOKO’s on July 22.
Our Gender faction set forth a task to raise the number of
women in our lists to the European standard of 30%. We have
done more, and now we can already speak about approaching
a 50% parity, a norm for the European “green” parties.
I am especially glad that women are topping six out of 17
regional groups, rather than taking second or third places
in the lists. I think this is a good indicator of the party’s
efficiency in ensuring gender equality and work of the faction.
However, we have been striving to reach this result for a
very long time.
I would like to note here, that the Gender Commission was
created as early as in 2002, and the faction based on the
commission was established in 2006. We are the only party
which clearly formulates the tasks of ensuring equal rights
and providing equal possibilities for women, as well as promotes
women in politics.
It is a pity that the top of the list is yet lacking a woman.
But I am sure that this will take place in the perspective,
however, I wish this would happen in a short term, and not
after seven years of work as before.
Galina Mikhalyova is the leader of the Gender faction of
the YABLOKO party.
