Liberal International, Newsletter No 143, July 13, 2009

During the visit of US president Barack Obama to Russia this week, Sergei Mitorkhin, the leader of Russian LI Full Member party Yabloko had an opportunity to meet with the American president to speak about a variety of issues, primarily discussing cooperation in constructing a joint Russian-American anti-ballistic missile system (ABM). Presenting his plans to abolish unilateral deployment of ABM systems in Europe and consider organizing joint Russian-American coordination, Mitorkhin stated that “such a system is the most efficient project of all possible ABM systems, as it joins the common goals of the two largest world nuclear potentials”. Mitrokhin also said that history has already seen an example of successful cooperation for refuting global threats, citing the cooperation between the USSR and the USA during the Second World War. President Obama reacted to Mr. Mitorhkhin's plans by asserting that “I am currently reconsidering the issue of ABM deployment in Europe. I cannot rule out joint actions with Russia in this field and creating new security architecture.”
