Sergei Mitrokhin and Barack Obama discussed the Russian ABM system

Press Release, July 7, 2009

“I am currently reconsidering the issue of ABM deployment in Europe. I can not rule out joint actions with Russia in this field. But that will be another security architecture,” that’s how US President reacted on the proposal of YABLOKO’s leader Sergei Mitrokhin to abolish plans of unilateral deployment of ABM systems in Europe and consider organisation of a joint Russian-American ABM system.

As Mitrokhin told to Barack Obama, such confrontation steps can be extremely dangerous for the Russian democracy, which can not develop in the suffocative climate of anti-Western and Anti-American propaganda and fight against the outer world on all the fighting lines. Whether Russia’s global ambitions are realised via cooperation with the West or a confrontation largely depends on the USA at present.

Speaking about the viability of the Russian-American ABM system Mitorkhin stated that “such ABM system is the most efficient project of all possible ABM systems, as it joins together over common goals the two largest world nuclear potentials”. Mitrokhin also said that history has already seen an example of successful cooperation for refuting global threats – that was cooperation between the USSR and the USA during the Second World War. “Today we have to overcome a lesser distrust so that Russia-US strategic union in the field of security could protect the world from the nuclear threats of the 21st century,” told Mitrokhin.

Mitrokhin also handed to Barack Obama a package of YABLOKO’s proposals on these issues.
