The Yabloko party welcomes the beginning of the work of the All-Russia Democratic Assembly, which opened on June 19, 2001 in Moscow. Yabloko sees the All-Russia Democratic Assembly as a permanent forum of democratically-oriented political and civil organisations, whose representatives will have an opportunity to discuss without intermediaries the vital problems of Russia and develop, on the basis of mutual accord, a general approach to their resolution.

Photo by Olga Schweitzer.The participants of the All-Russia Democratic Assembly which took place in Moscow on June 19, 2001, demanded that the forced return of the refugees to Chechnya should be prohibited. According to Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Irina Khakamada, who participated at the meeting, the Yabloko and SPS factions of the State Duma will initiate the corresponding resolution of the lower chamber of the Russian parliament. As was noted by many participants of the Assembly, the requisite conditions for normal life should be created in Chechnya first, before the refugees from Chechnya start to return to their previous residences...

The Yabloko party insists on a nation-wide referendum to postpone the laws allowing for the import of spent nuclear fuel into Russia, even if this law is approved by the Federation Council and signed by the President. At the same time Yabloko will do all it can to persuade the Federation Council and the President not to plunge the country into ecological catastrophe.

A military helicopter was shot down on the border of Chechnya and Ingushetia

On May 31, 2001, a helicopter of the Federal Border Guard Service of the RF was shot down by Nesterovskaya settlement on the border of Chechnya and Ingushetia. Deputies of the State Duma, Alexei Arbatov, Deputy Chairman of the Duma Committee for Defence (the Yabloko faction) and Evgeny Zelyenov, member of the Committee, Hero of Russia (Regions of Russia Group) were on board the helicopter. The deputies were returning from a working trip to Chechnya.
