The St Petersburg branches of Yabloko and the SPS confirmed
their readiness to conduct on May 4 primaries to select
a single candidate from the democratic forces for the gubernatorial
elections in St Petersburg.
This was announced by the candidates for governor Igor
Artemyev (Yabloko) and Yuli Rybakov SPS) at press conference
in St Petersburg on May 3.
Yuli Rybakov said that, according to the Protocol on conducting
primaries (signed on May 3), 35,000 citizens of St.Petersburg
will participate in the primaries, and 40 electoral districts
will be specially established for this purpose.
The time of the primaries will be from 12.00 (Moscow time)
to 19.00. In turn Igor Artemyev stressed that all the obligations
undertaken by the participants to the agreement on the determination
of a single candidate will be fulfilled. Whichever candidate
is chosen by the electorate, all v both the SPS and the
Yabloko advocates will work for the single candidate, said
Igor Artemyev.
Stressing that the holding of primaries is unprecedented
in Russia, both the candidates admitted that the holding
of primaries and, most importantly, observance of all agreements
will demonstrate that the democrats are able to reject political
and personal ambitions for the sake of a common goal.
