On Saturday, February 19, 2000, the Central Electoral
Commission of the RF registered Grigory Yavlinsky, leader
of the Yabloko party, as presidential candidate.
“My goal is to win the elections, rather than simply participate”,
said Grigory Yavlinsky to journalists after the registration.
“We have to make a major choice - choosing the future
for our children, rather than a specific individual with
his strengths and weaknesses,” added Yavlinsky.
According to Yabloko’s leader, developments in the country
after the presidential elections, depending on the choice
of the electorate, may be different: “so-so, worse or definitely
better”, said Grigory Yavlinsky.
In 1996 Yabloko’s leader took part in presidential elections,
gaining the support of only about 7.5% of the electorate
in the first round.
The elections of the President of the Russian Federation
will take place on March 26, 2000.
