On the terrorist attacks in America

London, September 12, 2001

Liberal International is a global federation of liberal parties. At the moment we unite 84 parties from 67 countries on 6 continents. Liberals participate in government in countries as diverse as Belgium, Slovenia, Nicaragua, Honduras, Senegal, Taiwan and many more. In other countries we are the leading opposition parties. And then there are countries like Russia where our liberal partner, Yavlinsky's party Yabloko, is small but still manages to be an opinion leader.

There is also a degree of political diversion among liberal parties. Our political priorities are determined by the history of our country, the current economic and social situation and cultural factors. Nevertheless there are clear and strong common denominators among those 84 parties: human rights and democracy, social justice, tolerance, equality, market economy, free trade and a strong sense of international solidarity.

Liberal International expresses its sorrow over the loss of life after the horrific terrorist attacks that hit the United States of America on 11 September. Our first thoughts are with those who have lost a relative or friend.

Liberal International strongly condemns this terrorism. The blatant disregard for the sanctity of human life shown by these terrorist cannot go unpunished.

The American people are now fighting to rescue survivors, help the wounded and otherwise deal with the aftermath of these terrible events. On behalf of Liberal International we would like to express our solidarity with the American people.

The scale of the tragedy is yet to become clear. Thousands of lives may have been lost. Liberal International condemns those responsible for these gruesome acts. No political motive justifies this blatant disregard for the value of human life.

Liberal International strongly condemns those that have rejoiced at the loss of life in the USA. The pictures of Palestinians dancing in the streets and the comments of Osama bin Laden -a possible suspect- must have been unimaginably painful and offensive for the survivors of this tragedy.

Liberal International calls on the democratic community of states to join in bringing before justice those responsible for this atrocity as well as those that have aided and funded the perpetrators.

On behalf of Liberal International

Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, President
Jan Weijers, Secretary General
